The complexity of the day-side X-line during southward interplanetary magnetic field

چکیده

High-resolution global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations include both meso- and global-scale processes occurring at the magnetopause, which interact to determine time-dependent orientation of day-side x-line (DXL). This study demonstrates that DXL in GAMERA MHD varies on a time scale minutes during steady southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. behavior manifests observational data when reconnection outflows indicate direction is opposite prediction from steady-state model location. Because models do not capture dynamics are independent solar wind variations, particularly surface waves flux transfer events, they represent time-averaged state system.

The dayside ultraviolet aurora and convection responses to a southward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field

We examine the large-scale ultraviolet aurora and convection responses to a series of flux transfer events that immediately followed a sharp and isolated southward turning of the IMF. During the interval of interest, SuperDARN was monitoring the plasma convection in the dayside northern ionosphere, while the VIS Earth Camera and the Far Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) were monitoring the northern hemi...

Eastward propagation of a plasma convection enhancement following a southward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field

On October 27th 1984, high-latitude ionospheric convection was observed by the European incoherent scatter (EISCAT) radar. For a nine-hour period, simultaneous observations of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) were obtained sunward of the Earth's bow shock. During this period, the IMF abruptly turned southward, having previously been predominantly northward for approximately three hours, ...

Response of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system to a sudden southward turning of interplanetary magnetic field

[1] A sudden southward turning of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is simulated by the University of Michigan’s BATS-R-US model. The main goal of this study is to determine the time delay as well as physical processes between when an IMF discontinuity reaches the bow shock, when reconnection is initiated at the magnetopause, and when the ionosphere starts to react. While observations or empi...

THE EFFECT OF A SOUTHWARD INTERPLANETARY MAGNETIC FIELD ON STijRMER’S ALLOWED REGIONS

The motion of a charged particle in a magnetic dipole has first been studied by Wrmer. The different applications of Stiirmer’s theory to anrorae, cosmic rays and Van Allen radiation belt particles are recalled in an historical perspective. In this paper, we expand the Mrmer theory in order to take into account the effects produced by an additional uniform and stationary interplanetary magnetic...
